Partner: Shallom School
Access to education is not only a basic human right, but also a key factor to reduce poverty and child labour. Having this in mind, in 2003 “Shallom School” was established in Bebonuk Village, a poor neighbourhood in Dili, set up as a pre-kindergarten through grade 9 independent school.
We now have over 600 students from 4 to 16 years old, fostering their ability and their desire to make a positive difference and to “write a new history” for this still young nation.
Our education programs work to ensure that the various factors necessary for quality education are addressed – improvement of literacy and numeracy, teacher education, community involvement in education, classroom construction, co-curricular experiences, among others. Furthermore, with regular support volunteer professionals, we also provide health assistance for both students and their families.
Our main aim is to ensure access to quality education for the poorest and most marginalised children, as we strongly believe that education enables people to lift themselves out of poverty and continue to improve their lives.
